    It's not always practical or cost effective to return boards to the original manufacturer for repair. This is especially true if the equipment is obsolete or the manufacturer has ceased trading. Most of the manufactures upgr ade their product periodically and stop production of old model PCB. Hence most of the marine PCB is not available with ori ginal manufacture for replacement. Even if PCB is available abroad, import will take long time which would not be afford by ship schedules.

    What are normal faults encountered in a PCB Repair environment?

    Conventional Methods And Its Limitations

    Service engineer uses various methods and tools of testing which include conventional equipment's like Oscilloscopes, Multimeter and logic analyzer General testing Out-circuit testing is performed which may either require the PCB to be connected to the original circuit / equipment so as to get the necessary input signals.

    This way the whole / entire equipment is required for the testing and may become cumbersome. An other conventional method needs to remove the PCB and test the components separately.

    This may cause some major damage as removing and re-soldering has to be done and even the PCB tracks as well as components may get damaged.

    In order to a void all the above-mentioned problems we in our labs try using new methods. Our methods are the in-circuit testing ones, which do not require removing any components from the PCB.

    Moreover we at our labs use an intelligent in-circuit tester that tests the PCB at component level. It stimulates appropriate inputs to a device, measures its output response and declares whether it is functionally good or bad. Even complex natured LSI and MSI IC's are tested and the process is less time consuming with good results. Here we can repair the PCB's even with out circuit diagrams.

    Reverse Engineering of Marine PCB

    The need for REVERSE ENGINEERING OR RE ENGINEERING PCB's comes about for a variety of reasons chief among them is the need to replace an obsolete board that is no longer available from the original manufacturer (OEM). When a ship is become old by ten years, OEM stop production or modify the electronic circuits, hence replacements such PCB may not be available for replacement. Now a day’s most of the OEM is giving block diagram instead of circuit diagram. This block diagram is not useful for servicing of PCB’s.Often companies employ us to reverse engineer their own designs, because they have little or no documentation for their own product or their current design firm or manufacturer refuses to release design details and manufacturing files.Another reason is cost. Some boards are considered proprietary by the OEM when in fact they are not; they are just too expensively priced. Re-engineering a PCB assembly can provide improved or added performance to an old process.New and improved components and techniques may be utilized during the reverse engineering process improving operations, maintenance and support. PCB reverse engineering is done by hand. We also use computerized scanning programs because we have found that too much of a circuit can be missed and you end up doing it by hand anyway. We believe that doing the job right the first time saves time and money. A design engineer checks the emerging schematic to see that it makes sense. All too often, simple common sense is all that is needed to avoid costly errors.
